Aleph – First Year – Tuesday (Kaufman)

2/10: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with an all school Tefillah led by Rabbi Prass.  He asked us for examples of strength or power Sunday night, whether we watched the Super Bowl or not. He pointed out how our Gevurot prayer talks about strength. 
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 72 in the yellow box.
  3. Today  started lesson 16 we learned the Hebrew Letter NUN  and FINAL NUN both with the “saying sound” (N) and the vowel “EH”. 
  4. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 72-74 using the “favorites” game, and using their “pointer finger”.
  5. Students worked on “Sound Off” on page 73 and read about the “vowel hint YUD and FINAL CHAF”.
  6. Students made new flashcards for the Key Words; NER  (candle)., YaYEEN (Juice).
  7. Students worked hard on page 75.
  8. Letter and writing out Hebrew letters and words. “ The Write Letter” and “Picture This” on page 76.
  9. The day ended with the entire school gathering for Hebrew thru movement led by Rabbi Prass.  He began with the word of the week Persomet (Commercials), and asked the students about what they found interesting about the Super Bowl Persomet.  The discussion was fun to listen to.  Then we did a little Hebrew thru movement. We discussed Purim and how at our all-school celebration each student will read Hebrew from the Megillah. They need to be able to read these words without vowels.  Students who were present today have received their assigned portion.

2/3: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. We enjoyed an all-school T’Fillah with Rabbi Bellows in the Sanctuary.
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 68 in the yellow box.
  3. Today  started lesson 15 we learned the Hebrew Letter PAY l with the “saying sound” (P). 
  4. We read about the Vowel Hint about the  “EYE” rule saying sound page 68.
  5. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 69-70 using the “favorites” game, and using their “pointer finger”.
  6. Students made new flashcards for the Key Words; CHAI (Live-Life)., MISH PA KHA(family).
  7. Students worked hard on page 69,- “ The Write Letter” check”. Letter and writing out Hebrew letters and words on page 70.
  8. The day ended with our Hebrew thru Movement time. Rabbi Bellows leading an all school fun trivia game about Israel. Afterwards, Morah Tracy led the students in a rousing game of Shimon Omer (Simon Says).

1/27: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. We had an all school t’fillah led by Rabbi Prass.  He asked us what does it show when we bow.  The learners had some interesting answers.  He then pointed out how in the Aleinu, we bow showing many of the things they said earlier. 
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 64 in the yellow box.
  3. Today  started lesson 14 we learned the Hebrew Letters CHET, FINAL CHAF, CHAF all with the “saying sound” (CH). 
  4. We read about the Vowel Hint about the  “ Final Chaf” rule saying sound is the only final letter always followed by a vowel page 64.
  5. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 65 using the “favorites” game, and using their “pointer finger”.
  6. Students made new flashcards for the Key Words; CHALLAH (challah)., and BRACHAH(Blessing).
  7. Students worked hard on page 65,- “ Sound Advice”, “The Write” Letter on page 66 and “Sound Check” on page 67. Letter and writing out Hebrew letters and words on page 66.
  8. We finished our session with an all school assembly.  Instead of our normal Hebrew thru Movement, Rabbi Prass explained to the students the great significance of what happened over the weekend in Israel, when soldiers from the IDF returned the last deceased hostage being held in Gaza by Hamas, Ran Givili z’l.  For the first time in 12 years, there are no Israeli hostages being held in Gaza. The students had the opportunity to ask questions which were both interesting, and showed they grasped the bittersweet importance of this moment.

1/20: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. All students met in the sanctuary with Rabbi Prass for t’fillah.  Rabbi Prass asked the group, “What are things that we have to do?” He then pointed out that the new (new to Hebrew school t’fillah) prayer Aleinu, says that we need to praise and focus on good things like praising or complimenting. Please, ask your student if they remember which the new prayer was.
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 59 in the yellow box.
  3. Today  started lesson 13 we learned the Hebrew Letter ZAYIN with the “saying sound” (Z). 
  4. We read about the Vowel Hint about the  saying sound (:) “silent short vowel” sound page 59.
  5. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 60-61 using the “favorites” game.
  6. Students made new flashcards for the Key Words; MITZVOT (GOOD DEED)., and HALLELUYAH (halleluyah).
  7. Students worked hard on page on page 60,- “ It’s a Match”, page 61 “ Sound Alike”. Letter and writing out Hebrew letters and words on page 62.
  8. We worked on page 62 “Rhyme Time” and “Stop and Go on page 63.
  9. The day ended with all school Hebrew Through Movement led by Rabbi Prass. We reviewed all the words we have worked on this year, especially the Tu B’Shevat themed Hebrew Through Movement words. The students had a lot of fun.

1/13: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with all school Tefillah led by Rabbi Prass. Rabbi Prass has been sharing about one of CBA’s college students who has been traveling thru Israel on an interfaith trip with other students from her campus.  So many of the students have been asking for updates.  He asked us why we should care about Israel or her people.  The learners had really lovely answers.  Rabbi Prass pointed out that our connections to Israel are like t’fillah, perhaps it feels far away, perhaps it changes, and perhaps it is difficult, but it is part of our Jewish language.
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 54 in the yellow box.
  3. Today  started lesson 12 we learned the Hebrew Letters KOOF and KAF with the same “saying sound” (K) and VOWEL (OO)- 2 forms. 
  4. We read about the Vowel Hint about the  saying sound (OO) page 56.
  5. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 55-56 using the “favorites” game.
  6. Students made new flashcards for the Key Words; SUKKAH (SUKKAH)., and Kiddush (KIDDUSH).
  7. Students worked hard on page on page 54,- “ Hidden Picture” and “Sound Check” on page 55. On page 57 Letter and writing out Hebrew letters and words.
  8. We worked on page 57 “Decorate the Sukkah” and “ Odd Letter Out” on page 58.
  9. The whole school school met for Hebrew Thru Movement led by Rabbi Prass.  He reviewed past words and kept adding on more Tu Bishvat Hebrew words.  Rabbi Prass introduced more trees in Eretz Yisrael, to get ready for Tu B’Shevat (the 15th of Shevat) which falls on February 2 this year. Ask your student if they remember which fruit, in Hebrew, sounds very close to English?

1/6: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with an all school Tefillah led by Rabbi Prass. He asked us to share, whether a staycation or a trip, what is something you did with a family member over winter break that created a positive memory?  He then pointed out how these experiences are blessings.  He then reminded us that our bracha, Avot v’imahot is about blessing our relationships that God was with our ancestors, and that we have with one another.
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 50 in the yellow box.
  3. Today  started lesson 11 we learned the Hebrew Letters SIN and SAMECH with the same “saying sound” (S) and VOWEL (AY). 
  4. We read about the Vowel Hint about the  saying sound (AY) page 50.
  5. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 50-52 using the “favorites” game.
  6. Students made new flashcards for the Key Words . SABA (grandfather), ISRAEL (Israel), and SAVITA ( (Savita).
  7. Students worked in pairs on page 51, The “Write” Letter and writing out Hebrew letters and words on page 52.
  8. We ended the session for an all school Hebrew thru Movement led by Rabbi Prass.  He introduced new words for the upcoming Jewish holiday of Tu Bishvat.  Rabbi Prass started to introduce some of the trees in Eretz Yisrael, which are now starting to bloom. The next Holiday is Tu B’Shevat (the 15th of Shevat) which falls on February 2 this year. Ask your student if they remember which tree usually blooms first in Israel?

12/16: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with an all school Tefillah led by Rabbi Prass. Rabbi Prass asked the learners when they felt they were in front of someone/something special. He then related this topic to our kedusha prayer, when we stand on our toes saying “kadosh, kadosh, kadosh” and the Chanukah story. Rabbi Prass passed out the Chanukah candle blessings. We then lit the Chanukiah candles for the 3rd night of Chanukah before going off to class.
  2. We reviewed our Chanukah blessings.
  3. We reviewed all the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 45 in the yellow box.
  4. Today we learned the Hebrew Letters VAV and VET both with the  “saying sound of “V.  We also learned a new Vowel (:) which is silent.
  5. We read about the Letter Hint on page 45 about the “silent vowel” (:).
  6. The students are working very hard on writing out the Hebrew words and words on page 47.
  7. Students worked in pairs on page 46- “ Building the Hebrew Words”, pages 48-49 “Sound Check, “ Starry Night” and “Braid the Havdalah Candle”.
  8. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 47 using the “favorites” game.
  9. We made flashcards for Keywords MITZVAH- (Mitzvah- good deed) and HAVDALAH- (Havdalah- separation).
  10. During the last twenty minutes, we had an all-school “surprise” pizza party.  It was lovely to see all sit and chat and build community together.  On the way out, we gave each learner a dreidel.

12/9: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with an all school Tefillah led by Rabbi Prass. Rabbi Prass began with asking the students how the Maccabees felt as they fought and worked to overcome the Greek-Assyrians.  Rabbi Prass then pointed out that the prayer in our Amidah, Gevurot, means brave/strong, which might be how the Maccabees felt. Ask your student what Judah Maccabee’s last name means in English.
  2. Students and I went over the Aleph-Bet Quiz from last week. They are going home today and I need a parent’s signature and brought back. We started to learn the Chanukah blessings. Chanukah starts on 12/14 Sunday night.
  3. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 40 in the yellow box.
  4. Today we learned the Hebrew Letters TAV and TET both with the  “saying sound of “T. 
  5. We read about the Letter Hint on page 40 about the letters TAV and TET.
  6. The students are working very hard on writing out the Hebrew words and words on page 41.
  7. Students worked in pairs on page 43 “ Colors Galore!” and page 39 “ Odd Letter Out”.
  8. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 41-42 using the “favorites” game.
  9. We made flashcards for Keywords TALLIT- (tallit-prayer shawl) and TORAH- (Torah).
  10. Lastly, all of the classes joined in Hebrew Thru Movement led by Rabbi Prass and some of our students as well. We reviewed all of our words, including the Chanukah vocabulary.

12/2: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with Tefillah lead by Rabbi Prass. Rabbi Prass invited each of us to share something we did that was helpful over the Thanksgiving Holiday. This brought us to analyzing, the Gevurot, the prayer which literally means strength.  It points out that God uses strength to help others.  By our helping over Thanksgiving, we showed our strength.
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 35 in the yellow box.
  3. Today we learned the Hebrew Letter RESH with the  “saying sound of “R” and vowel AY. 
  4. We read about the Letter Hint on page 35&36 about the letter RESH.
  5. The students are working very hard on writing out the Hebrew words and words on page 37.
  6. Students worked in pairs on page 38 “ Picture This” and page 39 “ Odd Letter Out”.
  7. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 36-37 using the “favorites” game.
  8. We made flashcards for Keywords REGEL- (leg) and BEITSA- (egg).
  9. Lastly, all of the classes joined in Hebrew Thru Movement led by Rabbi Prass and some of our students as well. We layered in new words around Hebrew Chanukah vocabulary. Rabbi Prass also showed some of the congregation’s Chanukiyot, and explained the difference between an everyday menorah, and one used for Chanukah. Ask your student what the difference is. The students did some fun Hebrew through movement, as well.

He then explained that prayer can be one of those times where we don’t know what to say.  And so the first words of the t’fillah ask God to open our lips to help us pray, and to say positive words.
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page30 in the yellow box.
  3. Today we learned the Hebrew Letters TZADI and FINAL TZADI with the same “saying sound”. 
  4. We worked on Sound Bite page 27 and Odd Word Out page 28.
  5. The students are working very hard on writing out the Hebrew words and words on page 31.
  6. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 30-31 using the “favorites” game.
  7. We worked in pairs on The “Write” Letter and Sound Check on pages 32-33.
  8. The day finished with Rabbi Prass leading everyone in Hebrew through Movement. We layered on new words.

11/11: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with an all school Tefillah led by Rabbi Prass. We talked about who the students consider to be an impressive person and why it is important to let that person know that is how we feel about them. Rabbi Prass pointed out that the Avot v’imahot prayer, talks about God as impressive, and uses language of complimenting God.
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 25 in the yellow box.
  3. Today we learned one Hebrew Vowel with two different formats, EE “saying sounds”. 
  4. We read about the vowel-hints pages 25-26 about the rule of Hay letter makes no sound at the end of a word and the letter-vowel hint on the Hebrew letter YUD followed by a vowel.
  5. We worked on Sound Bite page 27 and Odd Word Out page 28.
  6. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 25-26 using the “favorites” game.
  7. We made flashcards BIMAH- (stage) and EMA- (mother).
  8. Lastly, all of the classes joined in a game of Hebrew Thru Movement, lead by Rabbi Prass.  We introduced several new words to our already existing vocabulary.

He then showed us that the Avot v’imahot prayer is about our ancestors, and by extension us, being in relationship with God.  Or in other words God having our back

  3. Today we learned one Hebrew letter, YUD (Y “saying sound” and HAY and (H “saying sound”. 
  4. Do Same Sound on page 18 and page 19 Sound Check.
  5. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 17-18 using the “favorites” game.
  6. Writing letters and words on page 19.
  7. We made flashcards for Keywords YAD- (hand) and HAY- (The).
  8. The day finished with Rabbi Prass leading Hebrew through Movement. We reviewed the new words we learned last week.

10/28: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our school day began with an all-school Tefillah led by Rabbi Prass. He led a discussion about what makes them feel safe and why it is important to feel safe.  He then pointed out that the end of the Avot v’imahot prayer talks about God being the Magen (or shield of our ancestors).
  2. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 21 in the yellow box.
  3. Today we learned one Hebrew letter, GIMEL (G- “saying sound”), and EH vowel in different formats. 
  4. Read vowel hint on page 21 on the EH vowels. Some Hebrew vowels make the same sound but different forms, we are learning.
  5. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 22-23 using the “favorites” game.
  6. Writing letters and words on page 23 and worked on Sound Advice on page 22 and Help the Rain Get to Israel on page 24.
  7. Aleph and Bet students went outside with Rabbi Prass for Hebrew Through Movement. It was nice to get some fresh air and sunlight.

10/21: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. We joined the rest of the school and Rabbi Prass for tefillot.  In addition to our ‘regular’ t’fillot, we reviewed the recent holidays thru by looking at the symbols of the shofar, white Torah mantel, lulav, and etrog. We heard how the dried lulav sounds like rain, since the rainy season in Israel has now begun and some of the prayers we say ask for bountiful rain. We also spoke of the recent release of several hostages from Hamas and answered students’ questions.  We concluded with singing Hatikvah.
  2. Have your child show you the game Aleph Shuffle we played to show them how to read Hebrew (right to left).
  3. We reviewed the Hebrew letters, vowels and key words on page 13 in the yellow box.
  4. Today we learned two Hebrew letters, Lamed (L- “saying sound”), DALET- (D-“saying sound”), and two OH vowels. 
  5. Read vowel hint on page 14 on the OH vowel. Some vowels  in Hebrew are over the letters.
  6. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 13-14 using the “favorites” game.

  8. Aleph & Bet students later gathered with Rabbi Prass to have an up close look at one of the Torah scrolls, since last week was Simchat Torah. Ask your student what they learned about the Torah. Each student got to read one letter from the Torah. They are now officially on their way to being Torah readers!
  9. We made flashcards for Keywords ADOM- (red) and SHALOM- (hello, goodbye and peace) and the OH vowels .

9/30: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. All the classes joined together for t’filah led by Rabbi Prass.
  2. Have your child show you the game Aleph Shuffle we played to show them how to read Hebrew (right to left).
  3. Today we learned three Hebrew letters: two silent letters; AYIN (silent no sound), ALEF- (SILENT-no sound), and BET ( b- sound). 
  4. We read ALOUD to hear ourselves and sound out the words. Pages 10-11 using the “favorites” game.
  5. It was nice to have Hebrew thru Movement outside with the BET class, to learn new words and motions.
  6. We made flashcards for Keywords AHM- (nation) and ABBA- (father) and the three vowels AH (t, _ _:).

9/17: Today in class, we worked on:

  1. Our session began with Tefillah where Rabbi Prass reviewed how our services are structured. We discussed why we are wearing kippot during Hebrew School t’fillot. We then prayed the avot v’imahot and sang the Israeli National Anthem.
  2. Have your child show you the game Aleph Shuffle we played to show them how to read Hebrew (right to left).
  3. Today we learned three Hebrew letters: MEM (m-sound), SHIN- (sh-sound), and FINAL MEM ( m- sound) which is found at the end of the word. We learned three vowels, the” saying sound “ AH, found under the letter. 
  4. We read ALOUD pages 6-7 using the “favorites” game.
  5. Aleph and Bet students went outside to have a lesson in how to blow the shofar with Rabbi Prass. It was fun to listen to the students try their best. I heard some impressive sounds!
  6. We made flashcards for Keywords SHAM- (there) and SHAMASH- (helper) and the three vowels AH (t, _ _:).
